When you have a message to share with your target audience, there is no medium more effective than communicating through video. With the risk of information overload, it’s vital that you offer content that is easy to digest and personal, otherwise potential clients will simply move on.
But just as important as what you say, is how you look. Did you know that presence and body language account for 55% of a conversation, while the words themselves only account for 7%?
First impressions are everything, so use the tips below to dress the part for your next video.
Tips for What to Wear on Camera
1. Dress Like Your Meeting With Clients
The more relaxed and natural you are, the better you will appear on camera and people viewing your video or photos will know what to expect at their first meeting with you.
2. Choose Solid Colors
We recommend solid colors such as blue, beige, off-white, etc. as they look best on video. It is also recommended you bring a change of clothes to appear more casual in some of the shots. Black and burgundy are colors that work well with dark backgrounds. Denim, pastels, and light colors work well with light backgrounds and with most outdoor settings.

3. Wear Full-Length Clothing
If you’re a woman being photographed in full-length clothing, wear long skirts, pants or stockings in dark colors, to keep the eye from being directed toward the legs and away from the face. The same goes for men: wearing shorts is a no-go.
4. Keep Clothing Simple
For most situations, simple clothing will serve the message best. Solid colored clothing in middle to dark tones works well. They give the illusion of timelessness for the video or photo. Shy away from stripes, or busy patterns that could date the image years from now, instead think about blending textures to achieve the most natural look for your message.
5. Go With the Long Sleeves
Long sleeves are best since bare-arms usually distract from the face. You might consider bringing different items for different scenes. The key is to wear something comfortable. If you are not at ease with how you look, this will show in the video or photos.
